Conclusion:
Our project, based solely on our initial and somewhat over-ambitious goals, was not successful. This was due to a combination of time restriction and unforeseen difficulties arising from working with a highly volatile, extremely cold, liquid. However, we did learn a great deal, and in this sense we were quite successful. We decided towards the end of the project’s allotted working time that we would not be able to reach our goals as we had originally intended. Instead, we created a documentary-style report and video that would cover all that we had learned: the creation of liquid O2, its paramagnetic properties, and the different dropping methods that we tried.
Our time was mostly devoted to our initial attempts to create liquid oxygen splashes. The first thing we did was to develop a method, with the help of the chemistry staff, for the creation of liquid oxygen. This is further detailed in our Methods section. After that, we spent a good deal of time working on getting a dropping mechanism developed. As soon as this was working fairly well, we attempted several different splashing methods, such as into water or onto a flat surface. Once again, these different setups are explained in our Methods section. Finally, as mentioned above, we spent the remainder of the time documenting our work and filming our video, which can be viewed in the Video section.
