| Our Project Setup |
![]() As is made obvious by the simple diagram above, our setup was really quite simple. It consisted entirely of freezing fruits in liquid nitrogen for 7-10 minutes, then throwing them at the floor in front of a dark background. The sound of impact set off our sound trigger, which then set off our flash. Since we were using manual shutter speed and taking the pictures in the dark, this had the same effect as using an extremely high shutter speed. Visit our links section for links to information on assembly and usage of sound and other triggers. |
| Specific Photo Techniques |
|
For our first two b&w photos, we used f/4, flash speed of yellow and a trigger distance of .75 and .5 meters, respectively. We then moved to f/5.6 and f/8 with red flash speed for the next few pictures. After developing, we decided that f/5.6 with yellow flash was the best combination. We then took all of our digital pictures with this combination except for the last two, which were f/8. The only other variations we used with the digital photos were to change up the fruit and then throw some at the wall instead of the ground. |
| What We Got Out of the Project |
|
We thoroughly enjoyed our project, as it both allowed us to throw frozen oranges at the ground and have them explode (what teenage guy wouldn't love that?), and allowed us to take some really interesting photos while learning some interesting techniques. The final pictures could be improved a lot by finding a way to not capture the background along with the image of the fruit. |
