While appearances may seem to indicate otherwise, this is not a black magic ritual.  Here we see the Creative Balloonists at work. They fashioned plastic smocks to protect themselves from the splatter of various substances (Jello, soap, syrup, ...) that they put in their balloons. They took their photographs with a conventional camera, a Pentax K1000, and scanned the negatives.
