High Speed Imaging Class:
One of the courses I am taking at NCSSM is high speed photograph. In this course we taking pictures of objects moving at a high speed. This requires the use of photography techniques to keep the picture of the object from blurring. One technique is to actually create a dark setting for the object to be photographed in. This allows the shutter of the camera to be open for a fairly long duration of time ( at least a second or two). Then with the use of a flash unit (Such as the Vivitar) one can illuminate the object very briefly allowing the picture to be exposed. However, most of the time the problem is that one needs to know when to flash the light in order to take a picture of the object at the right time. In order to flash the unit at the right time one can use triggers such as: sound triggers and photogates. With a sound trigger the flash goes off when a detectable sound is produced. With a photogate the flash goes off when an object breaks the beam of light between the photogate emitter and detector. Sometimes we also use delayed sound triggers and delayed photogates in this course in order to capture a picture of an object in a interval after it has set off the trigger. The delayed sound triggers and delayed photogates make the flash unit flash after the trigger has been set off. One can control how long the delay is by turning a knob that controls how long the interval between the sound trigger being set off and the flash from the flash unit is in milliseconds.

This is me jumping off the table. In this picture the shutter was open in the dark for a second or two. The flash unit was set off by a sound trigger. My clapping is what triggered the sound trigger to set off the flash unit.
